Tips to Convince your Boss

The pinch of our economy affects everyone, from the largest to the smallest of businesses. As an employee, you may be receiving a lot of "no's" from your supervisor on requests you may have at work. Well, the truth is that as much as you hate hearing "no" as an answer, your boss hates delivering this blow. How do you argue something like professional training with your bosses? You know there is true value that training brings to your organization...so, how do you convince your boss to give you the "green light" when it comes to making a financial investment in none other than...YOU.

Here are some tips on how to get the “yes” from your manager:

  1. Our sessions provide the most up-to-date content in the industry. Remember that saying "It is better to teach a man to fish, than to give him a fish?" At STAREAST 2009, the program is designed to provide tangible practices, tools and knowledge yielding impactful results. So, go ahead, learn how to catch that fish...we'll show you how to make your fish farm work for you.
  2. Take your new knowledge back to the office and hold a training session for your co-workers.
  3. Register early and save up to $500 dollars per person! Save BIG with any of these combinations - early bird pricing, alumni savings, group discounts, Bring a Buddy, PowerPass discounts, and more!
  4. Networking opportunities — whether in a session or mingling inbetween, there are plenty of opportunities to meet with experts in the industry and your own peers. This is your time to bounce ideas off of others, see what others are doing in the same field.
  5. Organize a meeting with your colleagues upon returning from STAREAST 2009 and share what you've learned.
  6. Strrrretch that dollar! Learn how to do more with less—find ways to control costs, increase revenue, and build better software.
  7. Knowledge is priceless. Have some short and long term goals in mind to present to your boss. Think of ways to hit the ground running upon your return from the conference.

You may have received the "yes" you were hoping for after presenting these reasons to your boss. Now what? Tip number one....Make good on your word! Getting permission to attend a conference is only half the battle; ideally, you want that conference to pave the way for future conferences you'd like to attend. A few words to the wise:

- Be frugal. While traveling on the company's dime, be sure to spend conservatively.

- Think of yourself as an ambassador of a country...or company in this case. You represent the face of your business - let your actions reflect all things in the professional interest of your workplace.

- Reiterate the facts and benefits. Think of it as a bit of a sales pitch to your boss (even after you've received your "yes"). Keep it short but professional, and come armed with a few bullet points about the short- and long-term benefits.
